Black paper bags are square-bottom gift and retail bags made from black paper stock, usually with rope or ribbon handles. Logos are added with foil stamping, spot UV, embossing or a light ink, since dark ink disappears on black. They are quoted per order, from $0.30 per unit.

Who uses black paper bags?

Jewelers, watch sellers, perfume counters and menswear shops are the usual buyers. So are wine stores, salons and event planners who want a formal handout.

Black does two jobs at once. It hides what is inside, which matters for gifts, and it makes a small metallic logo look expensive.

Many shops pair a black bag with tissue in a brand color. The contrast when the bag opens is part of the experience.

Black is also common for limited runs. A brand might use kraft all year, then switch to black for a store anniversary or a VIP evening.

How do you print a logo on a black bag?

Ordinary dark ink barely shows on black paper, so the logo needs a different approach. These are the options we quote most often. Our photo of a black bag with a gold mark shows the classic result.

MethodHow it looks on blackGood for
Gold or silver foil stampingBright metallic shine that catches lightJewelry, fragrance, spirits
Spot UVGlossy logo on a matte surface, tone on toneFashion and quiet luxury brands
EmbossingRaised logo with no color at allMinimal, texture-led branding
White or light inkClear, high-contrast printSalons, shops on a tighter budget
Foil plus embossingRaised metallic markFlagship or launch bags

Which black bag size fits a gift box?

Start with the box, not the bag. Measure the box width, depth and height, then allow roughly one extra inch on width and depth for tissue.

Add two inches or more to the height so the folded top band and handles clear the lid. A box that touches the handles pushes the top open and looks crowded.

Ring and necklace boxes usually sit well in the smallest jewelry size. Fashion stores lean toward the medium size. The large shopper takes shoe boxes and handbags.

If you sell several box sizes, two bag sizes usually cover most sales. We can quote both on the same order.

Rope or ribbon handles on a black bag?

Rope handles are thick cords set through holes in the top band and knotted or glued inside. They feel solid and suit bigger, heavier bags.

Ribbon handles are flat and soft, closer to a gift wrap feel. They suit jewelry and cosmetics, where the bag itself feels like wrapping.

Black handles keep the bag formal. A gold rope or a ribbon in your brand color adds a second accent without any extra printing. You can see rope styles in more detail on our page for rope handle paper bags in many colors.

Why does black paper stock matter?

There are two ways to make a black bag. One is to print solid black ink over white or brown paper. The other is to use paper that is black all the way through.

Printed black can show a pale line along folds and scratches, where the base paper peeks through. Black paper stock keeps creases and corners dark.

We quote black paper stock for these bags by default. If you see a cheaper quote elsewhere, ask which method it uses.

Black paper stock also takes foil cleanly. The metal sits on an even dark surface with no ink layer underneath.

What paper weight should a black gift bag be?

Black bags are often expected to feel heavy and stiff in the hand. For rope handle styles we usually suggest 157–210 gsm, about 96–129 lb basis weight.

Smaller jewelry bags with ribbon handles can use a lighter sheet and still feel crisp. Your quote names the weight, so you can compare like with like. The numbers are guidance for feel and stiffness, not a carrying limit.

Handling scuffs on a dark surface

Black shows dust, fingerprints and rub marks under shop lighting. That is the main trade-off with this color.

Matte lamination adds a thin film that takes light handling better than bare paper. Gloss lamination is shinier but shows fingerprints more.

  • Ask for sheets of paper between bags in the carton to stop rubbing.
  • Store cartons flat, not on end, so the top bands do not crush.
  • Keep a soft dry cloth at the counter to wipe dust before handing over.
  • Open bags just before use instead of setting out a full row in the morning.

Can a black bag have a white panel?

Yes. One of our photos shows a black bag with a large white front panel and black ribbon handles. It reads as a framed label and gives you a bright area for printing.

This works well when your logo has several colors that would be lost on black. The black sides and base keep the premium look, while the white face carries the detail.

Send us the panel size you have in mind, and we will lay it out on your proof.

Artwork tips for foil and spot UV

Foil and spot UV need clean vector artwork with each finish on its own layer. Fine serif type below about 6 pt can fill in, so keep small text bold or larger.

If you use foil and a light ink together, keep a small gap between them. Tight overlaps can shift slightly in production and look smudged.

Common mistakes when ordering black bags

Picking dark navy or deep red ink for the logo is the most frequent one. On black it simply vanishes.

Another is ordering a bag too tight for a gift box. Rope handles take up space at the top, so leave an inch of headroom above the box.

Last, buyers sometimes skip lamination on bags that sit on open shelves. If your bags are on display, matte lamination is worth the small extra cost.

Finally, do not judge foil from a screen preview alone. Metallic finishes look flat in a digital proof, so we describe the finish in writing as well.

Black Paper Bags: questions

12 answers. Type a word to narrow the list.

Can you print a white logo on black paper bags?

Yes. A light ink such as white gives a clear, high-contrast logo. It is often the most budget-friendly way to brand a black bag.

Is gold foil or silver foil more popular on black bags?

Gold is requested most for jewelry and spirits. Silver suits modern, minimal brands and pairs well with gray tissue.

Will the edges of a black bag turn white when folded?

Not with black paper stock, which is dark all the way through. Bags made by printing black ink on light paper can show pale creases.

Do black bags need lamination?

It is optional. Matte lamination helps the surface take handling, which matters most when bags sit on display.

Can a black bag have a colored ribbon handle?

Yes. Ribbon in your brand color is a simple accent and needs no extra printing on the bag.

What size black bag suits a ring or necklace box?

The 5.25 × 3.25 × 8.4 in size is a common choice for small jewelry boxes. Send us the box size to confirm.

Is spot UV visible on a black bag?

Yes, as a glossy shape against a matte surface. It is subtle in dim light and clearer when the bag catches light.

Can you emboss a logo with no color?

Yes. Blind embossing raises the logo from the paper with no ink or foil, which suits quiet, minimal branding.

Do rope handles on black bags come in other colors?

Yes. Black, gold, white and brand colors are common. Tell us the color and we confirm it on the proof.

Are black paper bags suitable for wine bottles?

A bottle needs a tall, narrow size and a heavier sheet. Give us the bottle height and diameter and we will size the bag.

Can I order black bags with no logo for events?

Yes. Plain black bags with rope or ribbon handles are often used for weddings, award nights and company events.

How do I keep black bags looking new at the counter?

Keep them in the carton until needed and wipe dust off with a dry cloth. Matte lamination also helps.
