Who orders custom printed paper bags?

Any shop that hands a bag across the counter is giving away a small sign. A printed bag carries your name down the street, onto the bus and into the next store your customer visits.

We print them for grocers, cafés, restaurants with carryout, clothing stores, gift shops and market stalls. Event teams order them for launches and trade days. Each group wants something different from the print, so tell us how the bag will be used. Still choosing a bag style? Browse our retail and shopping paper bags first, then come back for print.

  • Takeout and carryout orders that leave with a logo on show
  • Boutique purchases where the bag is part of the gift
  • Farmers market and pop-up stalls that need a recognizable bag
  • Company events, launches and conference handouts

How does your logo look on brown kraft compared with white?

Brown kraft is not a blank canvas. Ink sits on a tan, slightly fibrous surface. Colors print darker and a little softer than on screen.

Black, navy, deep red and dark green look sharp on brown. Yellow, pale blue and pastel pink tend to fade into the paper unless we lay down white underneath. White kraft gives cleaner, brighter color and is the better pick for photos. Our guide to kraft versus white paper bags shows the trade-off side by side.

One color, two colors or full color?

A one-color logo is the most common order we quote. It prints clean, keeps the bag looking honest and suits brown kraft well.

Two colors work when your brand has a fixed pair, such as a black name and a red mark. Full color (CMYK) makes sense for photos, illustrations and gradients. It needs a smooth surface, so most full-color jobs go on white kraft or coated paper.

Printing both sides costs more than one, but the bag shows your logo whichever way it is carried. Many shops print the full design on the front and a smaller logo or web address on the back. That keeps the cost down while no side looks empty.

Which handle suits a printed bag?

Twisted paper handles are the everyday choice. They are glued inside the top edge, fold flat for packing and suit takeout, grocery and casual retail.

Rope handles thread through holes in a folded top. They feel softer in the hand and make the bag look more considered, which suits apparel and gift purchases. Expect a rope handle to add cost and a little assembly time. Our paper bag handle types compared guide covers flat, ribbon and die-cut handles as well.

What size printed bag should a small shop start with?

Most shops start with one size that covers most sales, then add a second later. For a boutique or café, 8 × 4.75 × 10.5 inches is a common size. For clothing, books or two meals, 10 × 5 × 13 inches is often the better fit.

Measure your bulkiest everyday item, then add about an inch of room on each side. A bag that is too tight tears at the gusset when someone pushes a box in. Too loose, and a single candle rolls around and chips. The full standard paper bag sizes chart lists the other common dimensions.

Preparing artwork that prints well

Vector files (PDF, AI, EPS or SVG) give the sharpest edges at any size. A high-resolution PNG or JPG works for photos, as long as it is not a screenshot from a website.

Keep text and fine lines away from the folds. The gusset creases and the top turn will cut through anything placed too close.

  • Leave at least half an inch of clear space from every fold line
  • Avoid hairline strokes under about 0.5 pt on brown kraft
  • Send Pantone references if you need a specific brand color matched
  • Outline fonts or include them, so the type does not change
  • Tell us which face is the front if the two sides differ

Finishes that change how a printed bag feels

Uncoated kraft keeps the natural, matte look most food and market businesses want. For coated or white paper, matte lamination gives a soft surface and gloss lamination adds shine and some scuff resistance.

Foil stamping puts a metallic logo on the face, often gold or silver. Spot UV adds a raised gloss to one area, and embossing presses the logo into the paper. These finishes suit gift and fashion bags more than everyday carryout.

Mistakes we see on first print runs

Most problems with printed bags come from decisions made before the proof, not from the press. These are the ones we flag most often.

  • Choosing a pale brand color for brown kraft without a white base
  • Placing the logo too low, where the hand and bag edge hide it
  • Ordering one size too small to save on paper, then bags split
  • Skipping the back panel, so half the carries show a blank bag
  • Approving the proof without checking phone numbers and web addresses

Custom Printed Paper Bags: questions

12 answers. Type a word to narrow the list.

Can you print a white logo on brown kraft bags?

Yes. White ink on brown kraft gives a clean, natural look. Your proof shows how opaque the white will appear on the paper.

How many colors can a printed paper bag carry?

Anything from one spot color up to full color (CMYK). One or two spot colors suit logos; full color suits photos and gradients.

Will my brand color print exactly on kraft paper?

Not always. Brown kraft darkens most colors. For a close match, choose white kraft or a white base layer, and send your Pantone reference.

Can the logo on the back differ from the front?

Yes. Many shops print the full design on the front and a small logo or web address on the back. Send both files and mark which is which.

Can you print on the side gussets?

A simple mark or web address can go on the gussets. Keep it small, because the gusset folds down the middle.

Do printed bags take longer than plain bags?

Printed or plain, the press time is the same: 4–6 business days once your proof is signed off. Extra proof rounds are the only thing that adds days.

What file should I send for a printed bag?

A vector file such as PDF, AI, EPS or SVG is best. A high-resolution PNG or JPG is fine for photos.

Can I see my logo on the bag before I order?

Yes. Use Design Your Bag on this site for a quick preview, then approve the free design proof before printing.

Is full-color printing possible on brown kraft?

It is, but colors look muted and warm. For photos or bright artwork, white kraft or coated paper gives a far better result.

Can you add foil to a kraft printed bag?

Yes. Foil stamping works on kraft and gives a metallic logo. It suits gift and boutique bags more than food carryout.

Which handle do most printed bag orders use?

Twisted paper handles, because they are practical and fold flat. Rope handles are the step up for apparel and gift shops.

Can I order two sizes with the same print?

Yes. We scale the artwork to each size and show both on the proof. That way the logo sits right on each bag.
