What is a tin tie bag, and who orders it?
A tin tie bag is a gusseted paper bag with a flat wire strip glued just below the opening. The strip lets the customer close the bag again at home.
Most tin tie orders we quote come from small roasters, granola brands, popcorn shops and farm stands. They all sell something that gets used a scoop at a time.
The square bottom means a filled bag stands on a shelf or counter. That matters when the front panel carries your logo and flavor name. A bag that slumps hides the label and looks tired by the afternoon.
How much does each tin tie bag size hold?
We size tin tie bags by what goes in them, not by a fixed chart. A bag of light popcorn needs far more space than the same weight of dense coffee beans.
The table below is a starting guide. Always test with your own product, because grind, roast and chunk size all change the fill line.
| Product | What changes the fit | What to tell us |
|---|---|---|
| Whole bean coffee | Darker roasts are larger and lighter per bean | Fill weight and roast level |
| Ground coffee | Packs denser than whole beans | Fill weight and grind |
| Granola and trail mix | Clusters leave air gaps | Fill weight and largest piece size |
| Popcorn | Very light, needs height and width | How many cups or scoops per bag |
| Loose leaf tea | Bulky leaf, low weight | Fill weight and leaf style |
How does the tin tie closure work?
The tie is a thin metal core inside a paper or plastic sleeve. It is glued flat across the top of the front panel, an inch or so below the edge.
After filling, fold the top over the tie two or three times. Then bend both tie ends back over the sides. The customer reverses this to open it and folds it again to close.
Leave at least two inches of empty bag above your product. Without that headspace the top will not roll far enough to hold. Bags filled to the brim also tear at the side seams when customers force the tie.
Which paper and weight suit a tin tie bag?
Natural brown kraft gives the classic roaster look. White kraft makes printed colors brighter and suits bakeries, tea brands and candy.
As a guide, tin tie bags are often made around 70–80 gsm, roughly 43–49 lb basis weight. Our guide to paper weight and gsm explains what those numbers mean in the hand.
Oily products such as dark roast beans or buttered popcorn can mark plain paper over time. Tell us what goes inside, and we will talk through paper options on your quote.
Can a tin tie bag have a window?
Yes. A narrow clear window strip running down the front lets customers see the beans, bread or granola before they buy.
Windows work best when the product looks good on its own. Fresh bread, colorful trail mix and whole beans sell well through a window. Plain ground coffee or pale oats usually look better behind a printed panel.
Keep logos and text away from the window edges. Ask for the window on your quote, and the proof will show exactly where it sits.
Printing a tin tie bag: front, back and gussets
The front panel is your label. Most customers print a logo, product name and a blank space to stamp or write the roast date.
The back panel suits brewing notes or ingredients. Side gussets fold in when the bag is flat, so keep fine text off the fold lines.
One-color print on brown kraft keeps costs down. Full color works on white kraft, like an all-over popcorn pattern. Roasters often pair these with our paper coffee bags for retail shelves.
- Leave the top two inches clear, because that area folds over the tie.
- Put a blank box on the front for dates or flavor stamps.
- Avoid thin white text on brown kraft; it can fill in.
- Keep barcodes on a flat panel, not across a gusset.
Filling and closing tips for your counter
A wide funnel or a scoop with a flat edge speeds up filling. Open the bag fully and press the bottom square before you pour.
Tap the filled bag on the counter to settle the contents. Then fold the top over the tie and press each fold flat with your thumb.
Close a few test bags and leave them on a shelf for a day before a big run. If a fold springs open, add more headspace or move to the next size up.
What goes wrong with tin tie bags?
Most problems we hear about come from sizing by guesswork. These are the ones worth checking before you approve a proof.
- Ordering a bag that fits the fill exactly, so the top cannot fold.
- Placing the logo so high that it rolls under the tie.
- Choosing a window for a product that looks dull in a pile.
- Printing a roast date that changes every batch instead of leaving a blank.
- Assuming every snack bag needs a tie; one-time snacks often do not.

Tin tie bags or another bakery and snack bag?
Pick a tin tie bag when your customer will open and close the pack many times. A treat eaten on the spot needs no tie, so a plain square-bottom bag is simpler and cheaper.
If you sell popcorn by the scoop for eating right away, look at our printed popcorn bags for snack stands. They skip the tie and open wide for fast filling.
Tin Tie Bags: questions
12 answers. Type a word to narrow the list.
Can customers reseal a tin tie bag more than once?
Yes. The metal core bends many times, so the pack can be rolled open and shut until it is empty. Very heavy folding at one spot can eventually crease the paper.
Where is the tin tie placed on the bag?
It is glued flat across the front panel, a short distance below the top edge. The tie ends stick out slightly past each side so they can be bent back.
Do tin tie bags come with the tie already attached?
Yes. The tie is fixed during production, and the bags ship flat with it in place. You only fill, fold and bend.
How much headspace should a tin tie bag have?
Leave at least two inches of empty bag above the product. That gives enough paper to roll the top over the tie two or three times.
Can I put coffee beans straight into a tin tie bag?
Many roasters do. Tell us the roast and fill weight so we can suggest a size. Oily dark roasts can mark plain paper, so we also talk through paper choices.
Is a tin tie bag airtight?
No. A folded tin tie closure keeps the bag shut and tidy, but it is not a sealed or airtight closure. Say so on your quote if your product needs more protection.
Can I get tin tie bags with a clear window?
Yes, a window strip on the front panel is an option. Ask for it on your quote and the proof will show its exact size and position.
Will my logo show after the top is folded down?
It will if it sits below the fold area. Keep the top two inches of the front free of key artwork.
Can I print a different flavor on each tin tie bag?
Each printed design is set up separately, so ask for a quote with each flavor and its quantity. A blank flavor box you stamp in-house is another option.
Do tin tie bags stand up on a shelf?
Yes. The square bottom opens flat once the bag is filled, so it stands upright on a counter or shelf.
What sizes of tin tie bag do roasters usually order?
Half-pound and one-pound fills are the most common requests. We size the bag around your own fill weight rather than a fixed list.
Can tin tie bags be made in white paper?
Yes. White kraft is a popular choice for tea, candy and bakery items, and it makes full-color print look brighter.
