What is a die-cut handle?

Die-cutting means punching a shape out of paper with a steel-edged form. On these bags, the shape is the handle itself, cut through the top of the bag.

Because there is no cord, rope or strip to attach, the bag is quick to make and lies dead flat. The paper around the hole is doubled with an inner patch or a folded flap. That stops it tearing when lifted.

Die-cut bags are also easy to store. A bundle sits flat on a shelf, with nothing poking out to crease the bag above it.

Who orders die-cut handle bags?

Takeout restaurants like them because a gusseted die-cut bag holds boxed meals upright and closes neatly at the top. Bakeries use them for cake slices, cookie boxes and loaves.

Event teams and schools order flat die-cut bags for handouts. They print well and cost less than rope or twisted handles. Toy shops and kids' stores like the fold-over style with a bold printed seal.

  • Takeout and delivery restaurants packing boxed meals
  • Bakeries sending out pastry boxes and bread
  • Trade shows and conferences handing out brochures
  • Schools, charities and fun runs giving out welcome packs
  • Toy and gift shops wanting a closed, carry-ready bag

Patch, fold-over flap or gusseted takeout style?

There are three common builds, and each one suits a different job. The right pick depends on how deep your contents are and whether the bag should close.

The fold-over style looks tidy for gifts because the top closes over the contents. The gusseted takeout style keeps food boxes level. For small or flat handouts, a patch-reinforced flat bag is the simplest option.

BuildHow the hole is reinforcedBest use

Fold-over flapFront flap folds over; hole cuts both layersGifts, toys, retail packs
Gusseted takeoutDeep top band with an inner patchBoxed meals, bakery orders
Gusseted retailFolded top turn around the holeClothing and general retail

How big should a die-cut takeout bag be?

Size it to your boxes, not to a standard chart. A die-cut bag needs extra height above the contents for the hand hole, usually around three to four inches.

Packing two meal boxes side by side? Match the bag width to both boxes together, plus a little room. The gusset should match the depth of one box. Send us your box sizes and we suggest a bag around them. For general guidance, see our common paper bag dimensions chart.

Is a die-cut handle comfortable to carry?

For short carries, yes. The hole takes four fingers, and the reinforced edge spreads the pull across the hand.

For long walks with a heavy load, a twisted or rope handle is kinder on the fingers. So die-cut bags suit takeout, bakery and event use. There the bag goes from counter to car, or around a venue. If your customers walk a long way, our handle types guide compares the options.

Hand comfort also depends on the hole edge. A clean, smooth cut through doubled paper feels much better than a rough cut through a single layer.

Printing the whole face

With no handles hanging over the front, a die-cut bag gives you a clean print area. Many bakery and takeout bags print a large word or logo right across the face.

Keep text and logos clear of the hand hole and its reinforcement area. Allow at least an inch around the hole, because the punch position can shift slightly between bags. On fold-over bags, the flap suits a logo seal. It sits front and center once the bag is closed.

Choosing the paper

Brown kraft is the common choice for takeout and bakery bags. It looks natural and hides small marks from handling.

White kraft and colored paper suit events and retail, where the bag carries strong brand color. For food, pack items in a box or wrap first; the bag is the carrier, not the food wrap. Our range of bakery and café bags covers wraps and window bags for direct contact with baked goods.

Packing tips for die-cut bags

A die-cut bag behaves differently from a handled one. These habits keep it looking good when it leaves your counter.

  • Leave the top few inches empty so the hand hole lines up front and back
  • Put boxes in flat, with the heaviest one at the bottom
  • Line up the front and back holes before handing the bag over
  • On fold-over bags, close the flap fully so the hole cuts through both layers
  • Keep hot food vented briefly before closing, to limit steam inside

Mistakes we see on die-cut bag orders

The most common error is ordering a bag that is too short. Once boxes are in, the hand hole sits on top of the contents and nobody can get their fingers through.

Another is artwork running into the hand hole. A logo with a neat oval cut out of it looks like an error. The last is choosing very light paper for a takeout bag, which bends around the hole after a few lifts.

A fourth slip is forgetting the back. On a gusseted takeout bag, staff often hand it over back-first, so print both faces if the budget allows.

How do I order die-cut handle paper bags?

Most die-cut bags are sized to the customer's contents. Tell us what goes inside and we take it from there.

  1. Send your box or item sizes, or a size you already use.
  2. Choose flat, fold-over or gusseted, and the paper color.
  3. Upload your artwork and say which sides to print.
  4. We return a written quote, with die-cut bags from $0.30 each.
  5. Check the free proof, which shows the hand hole position.
  6. Punching and making take 4–6 business days. Cartons then spend 2–3 business days in tracked transit, free to the US, UK, Canada or Australia.

Checking your delivery

Pull a few bags from each carton. Check that the hand holes line up front and back, with print clear of them.

If you find a misprint or transit damage, photograph it and contact us within 10 days. We will reprint the bags or refund them.

Keep spare cartons in a dry spot near the counter. Avoid the fryer and dishwasher, where steam softens paper.

Die-Cut Handle Paper Bags: questions

12 answers. Type a word to narrow the list.

How is a die-cut handle made?

A steel-edged form punches the handle shape through the top of the bag. The area around it is doubled for strength.

Do die-cut bags have a gusset?

They can. We make flat die-cut bags for handouts and gusseted ones for takeout and bakery boxes.

Are die-cut handle bags cheaper than twisted handle bags?

Often, because no separate handle is fitted. Your quote compares the exact build.

How much space does the hand hole need above the contents?

Usually three to four inches. Tell us your box height and we size the bag to leave room.

Can I print over the area around the hand hole?

Keep artwork at least an inch clear of the hole, as the punch can shift slightly between bags.

What is a fold-over die-cut bag?

The front flap folds over the back. The hand hole cuts through both layers, so the bag stays closed when carried.

Are die-cut bags good for food delivery?

Yes, for food packed in boxes or containers. The bag closes neatly at the top and stacks flat before use.

Can die-cut handle bags be made in white or color?

Yes. White kraft and colored paper are common for events and retail.

Do die-cut bags stand up on their own?

Gusseted die-cut bags stand on a square base. Flat die-cut bags do not.

Is a die-cut handle as comfortable as a rope handle?

For short carries it is fine. For long walks or heavy loads, a rope or twisted handle is more comfortable.

Can the hand hole be a different shape?

Oval and rounded slot shapes are standard. Other shapes need a new cutting form, so mention them early.

Will my proof show where the hole is cut?

Yes. The proof marks the hand hole so you can check your artwork clears it.
