What makes a gift bag different from a shopping bag?

A shopping bag carries a purchase home. A gift bag is part of the present, so it gets looked at, handled and often kept.

That changes the details. Gift bags use softer handles such as ribbon or rope, smoother papers and finishes like foil or matte lamination. They are often smaller, because gifts are often small.

Gift shops, florists, bakeries and boutiques order them for wrapped sales. Event planners order them once, in a large batch, printed with a name and a date.

Gift bags also get reused. A well-made bag with a neat logo often gets passed around a family two or three times. Your name goes to every new party with it.

For an all-purpose style, start with our paper gift bags with rope or ribbon handles.

Gift, boutique and event styles side by side

This range has five bags and two fillers. The table shows what each one is for, how it is carried and where sizing usually starts.

Fillers are sold by the sheet or by the bag of shred. Their size column reads differently from the bags.

What size gift bag fits the most common gifts?

Gift bags run smaller than shopping bags. A 5.25 × 3.25 × 8.4 in bag takes jewelry boxes, gift cards and small cosmetics.

The 8 × 4.75 × 10.5 in size takes a candle, a mug or a boxed perfume. A 10 × 5 × 13 in bag takes a folded sweater, a book or a small hamper.

Measure the gift with its box and tissue, not the item alone. Tissue adds a surprising amount of bulk at the top.

If a gift sits loose, the bag looks half empty. If it is too tight, the handles pull in and the top will not close neatly.

Gift shops usually stock three sizes: small, medium and one large for bottles or baskets. Florists and bakeries often get by with two.

For more standard dimensions, see our chart of common paper bag sizes.

Why choose ribbon handles?

Ribbon handles are soft, flat and colorful. They feel like part of the wrapping, which is why gift shops and wedding planners pick them.

The ribbon can match your brand color or the event palette. Satin and grosgrain looks are both common requests, and the bag body can be kraft or coated paper.

Ribbon bends more than rope, so keep it for lighter gifts. For heavier items such as bottles or stoneware, ask us about rope instead.

Tie a bow through both ribbons and the bag closes like a parcel. Customers often keep the ribbon for wrapping their next gift.

When is a luxury paper bag worth the cost?

When the bag sits next to a high-priced item, it should feel as good as the item. Jewelers, fashion labels and perfume brands order luxury bags for that reason.

These bags use heavy coated paper, often around 157–210 gsm as a guide. They have a folded top and a card base. The weight makes them stand straight on a counter and hold a crisp edge.

Finishes do the rest. Matte lamination with gold foil, spot UV on a black base or a blind embossed logo are popular combinations.

Store luxury bags flat and boxed until use. Laminated faces scratch if they rub together loose on a shelf.

Luxury bags cost more per unit than kraft, so many stores keep them for full-price sales. See finishes on our luxury paper bags with folded tops page.

Merchandise bags at the boutique counter

Not every boutique sale needs a handle bag. Earrings, scarves, cards and small accessories often go into a flat merchandise bag, then into the customer's own tote.

Many boutiques print the flat bag with the same logo as their gift bags. The customer sees one brand whether they spent ten dollars or two hundred.

A flat merchandise bag with a tissue wrap inside also works as a quick gift wrap. Staff fold the tissue, slide it in and add a sticker.

Keep two sizes of flat bag next to the gift bags. Staff then choose by item size in a second, and the gift bags last longer.

Flat styles live in our retail range. See sizes on the flat paper merchandise bags page.

Bags made for candles and home fragrance

Candle jars are heavy for their size and awkward to wrap. A candle bag is sized to the jar, so it sits snug and does not tip.

Measure the jar with its lid, plus any box. A single 8 oz jar and a three-wick tin need very different bags.

A window option lets customers see the candle color through the bag. Ribbon handles suit gift sales; bags without handles suit subscription boxes and market stalls.

Glass jars can rub through thin paper at the base corners on a long trip. A slightly heavier sheet or a tissue wrap around the jar avoids scuffed bags.

Tealight sets and reed diffusers follow the same rule. Measure the box, not the item, because most home fragrance gifts are sold boxed.

Candle makers selling at craft fairs often order two sizes, one for single jars and one for pairs. See our candle gift bags sized to the jar.

Favor bags for weddings, birthdays and company events

Party favor bags are small, square-bottom bags without handles. They hold a few sweets, a small gift or a keepsake on each seat.

Because each guest gets one, these bags are bought in round numbers that match a guest list. They are rarely reordered, so the artwork has to be right the first time.

Most event orders print a name, a date or a short message. Popular uses include:

  • Wedding favors with the couple's names and date.
  • Birthday party bags for children's parties.
  • Company events, conferences and team days with a logo.
  • Easter, Halloween and Valentine's Day treats.
  • Baby showers and school fundraisers.

Ordering favor bags for a single event

Event orders have a fixed date, so work backward. Count back from the event. The proof comes first, then a week or so on the press, then a few days in the mail.

Count guests, then add a few extra bags for spoiled ones and last-minute guests. Ten percent over the guest count is a common margin.

Leave the printed date off if the bags might be reused for a second event. A name or monogram alone keeps them useful.

See sizes and print ideas on our small party favor bags page.

Does a gift bag need tissue paper?

Tissue hides the gift, protects it and makes the bag look full. Ask anyone to imagine a gift bag and they see tissue folded at the top.

Custom tissue can carry a repeating logo or pattern, which turns a plain bag into a branded one. Boutiques also use it to wrap clothing inside a box.

Sheets are cut to size, so tell us the bag or box you use most. One size that fits your main bag saves staff from trimming.

Two sheets crossed at the top look generous. One sheet pushed in flat looks like an afterthought, so budget for at least two per bag.

See printing and sheet sizes on our custom printed tissue paper page.

Crinkle shred for baskets and boxes

Crinkle shred is crinkle-cut paper that fills the base of a bag, box or basket. It lifts the gift so it sits in view instead of sinking to the bottom.

Gift basket makers, candle sellers and subscription brands use it most. It comes packed loose by the bag, and a handful goes a long way in a small bag.

Match the shred color to the bag or the event. Kraft shred suits rustic gifts; colored shred suits bright party themes.

A light layer is enough in a gift bag; a basket needs a deeper bed. Tell us how many bags or baskets you fill each week and we suggest a pack size.

See colors and pack sizes for our crinkle paper shred for gift fill.

How to order gift and boutique bags

Gift bag orders go wrong when the handle, paper and finish do not match the price of what goes inside. Settle those three, then the rest is easy.

Order bags, tissue and shred together where you can. Colors then come from the same proof and match on the shelf.

If you are unsure which handle to choose, read our comparison of paper bag handle types first.

  1. Pick your bag styles and any fillers from the table.
  2. Measure your largest gift with its box and tissue.
  3. Choose handle, paper and finish: foil, spot UV, embossing or lamination.
  4. Upload your logo or event artwork with your quote request, or place it in Design Your Bag.
  5. Approve the written quote and the free design proof.
  6. Expect your gift bags to be ready 4–6 business days after sign-off. Free tracked shipping adds another 2–3 business days.

Gift, Boutique and Event Bags: questions

12 answers. Type a word to narrow the list.

What size gift bag fits a candle?

An 8 × 4.75 × 10.5 in bag fits most single candle jars. Candle gift bags can also be sized to your exact jar.

Can ribbon handles match my brand color?

Yes. Send your brand color or Pantone reference and we confirm the closest ribbon match on your quote.

What is the difference between a gift bag and a luxury bag?

A luxury bag uses heavier coated paper, a folded top and a card base, usually with foil or lamination. A gift bag can be kraft or coated and costs less.

Can favor bags be printed with names and a date?

Yes. Names, dates and short messages are the most common print on favor bags.

Is custom tissue paper printed on both sides?

Tissue is usually printed on one side with a repeating pattern or logo. Ask if you need something different.

Do you sell crinkle shred in colors?

Yes. Kraft and colored shred are both available, packed loose by the bag.

Are gift bags available with a matte finish?

Yes. Coated gift and luxury bags can take a soft matte or a shiny gloss laminate.

Can gift bags have foil stamping?

Yes. Foil stamping works well on coated and black papers, often in gold or silver.

Do candle bags come with a window?

A window is an option on candle gift bags, so the candle shows through.

How early should I order bags for a wedding?

Order at least three weeks ahead. That leaves time for the proof, production and delivery with a margin.

Can I order tissue and gift bags on the same quote?

Yes. Add tissue and shred to the same request and they are quoted together with the bags.

How are favor bags closed once they are filled?

Most hosts fold the top over and seal it with a sticker, a ribbon tie or a small tag. Favor bags have no handles, so the closure is the finishing touch.
